Card to be more expensive and more available than initial estimates.

Fudzilla is reporting various interesting details about the upcoming Radeon HD 3870 X2 launch. In an effort to redeem themselves for poorly-supplied launches as of late, AMD appears to be loading up their board partners with the R680-based cards. The article also has some remarks about the “delay” in the launch of the card to January 28th, a full week after the announced launch today. It would appear that the set back is the result of driver inadequacies, a point we made twice in our official review posted a couple of days ago.

The card suffers performance hits in various games, not the least of which is Crysis. This is very important for AMD to fix before officially launching the card, as Crysis is driving all kinds of hardware sales due to its inherent ability to kill old and new video cards.

The other bit of news is probably more pertinent to pretty much everyone; a price rumor. The article states that, store depending, the HD 3870 X2 will hit retail for somewhere between 410 and 430 euros. Translated to US dollars, this is somewhere in the $590 to $620 neighborhood. Obviously this new reported price is far greater than the $449 we had stated in our review of the card earlier this week. The reason for this price hike is anyone’s guess, but the important thing to note is that initial price rumors for NVIDIA’s upcoming 9800GX2 –a card which almost certainly will destroy the HD 3870 X2 in performance – have it being far more expensive than even the $620 estimates reported by Fuad.
