Conflicting reports are coming in that the highly-anticipated update to Windows Vista will be released in the very near future.
We have heard various reports that the long-awaited and perhaps much-needed service pack to Windows Vista could be coming out the door any day. A Taiwanese website has reported that the release date will be February 15th, which coincides well with Microsoft’s announcement of a Q1 launch (Feb 15 is right in the middle of Q1). However, while reports from PC World suggest that these rumors are true, an analyst from the firm Directions on Microsoft has said that the update may come as soon as tomorrow.
Microsoft has been in the heat seemingly ever since the release of Vista, which was met with mostly negative reviews. Objectively the operating system suffers from serious performance decreases when compared to Windows XP, though Microsoft has been able to reduce the significance of this problem through various hotfixes and updates. Subjectively critics have been bashing the UI and slow responsiveness in various areas, and questioning why anyone would choose the new operating system over its predecessor.
When Vista was in its infancy we released a column called “Life With Windows Vista” written by Jason Krueger. Jason went into depth about various problems with the OS and discussed the things he really liked. His overall impression of Vista was positive, and he remains an ardent supporter of the operating system to this day. As a result, he is frequently approached with all kinds of technical support questions that are Vista-centric. Most of the benchmarks run on FPSLabs as of late have been Vista-exclusive, not necessarily because we wanted them to be, but because we were unable to secure XP drivers for one reason or another.
The industry is certainly shifting towards Vista at a rapid rate now, and although it has been proven that games run much better on Windows XP, most new gaming systems are shipping with Windows Vista. Vista has also increased the adoption of 64-bit instructions, as Vista’s 64-bit version is far superior to any previously available 64-bit operating system. The new service pack should have a large impact on the success of Windows Vista, and it will be interesting to see how everything plays out in the coming months.
