Closure rumors persist despite official statement declaring otherwise, reports GotFrag.

Although FPSLabs is no longer part of the GotFrag network, we are all still very much gamers and to that end we keep well up to date on gaming news. Although this is not necessarily a place for posting eSports-related stories, one item in particular caught our eye this afternoon while browsing GotFrag. It appears that there are rumors running rampant over the imminent demise of the once-proud Cyberathlete Professional League.

The story revolves around the alleged termination of several high-up individuals in the CPL organization, including Chris “CPL|CrhisM” Moncivalles andMike “CPL|Allen” Allen. The rumor originated after a post from the CAL Operations Manager Martijn “CAL|Martijn” Bloemheuvel stated quite clearly that, “The CPL is dead. Finally actually dead as a tournament organization, not just “gg cpl == dead”-dead.”

The CAL organization then released an official statement refuting the allegations made in Bloemheuvel’s post. The official statement says, among other things, that Chris Moncivalles is no longer the commissioner of the CPL but he is still very much employed, as are Mike Allen and Thomas Hollingsworth –both of whom were to be on the verge of unemployment according to Bloemheuvel’s post.

In the midst of this hoopla, GotFrag launched an investigation in an attempt to get to the bottom of the story. Looking past the obvious and probably most pertinent question of why Martijn Bloemheuvel has a completely random “j” in his first name, GotFrag probed the rumor-starter regarding the reasons for his post. Without getting into too much detail, it would seem that Bloemheuvel decided to take it upon himself to inform the public of what he thought was going on in the CPL/CAL organization based on assumptions drawn from various happenings and circumstances that he had observed over the past few weeks.

Even though the CPL has effectively been a joke for the past two years already, it would be an absolute shame to see the organization that once stood as the definition of eSports meet its end. The CPL may be run by a shady individual and it might just be the very worst organization for competitive eSports currently out there, but nobody can deny the effect the organization has had on the eSports community over most of the last decade.

The general feeling we get from reading CAL’s tentative official statement is that the CPL as a whole will be heading in a new direction very soon and that is the underlying reason for the changes that have been made recently. There is no word yet on whether or not this new direction is toward the rubbish bin, but GotFrag will assuredly keep you updated.

In other news, Mark “jESUIT” Cheben is not good at Counter-Strike.
