ATI is avidly working on its new CrossfireX driver in the meantime.

Via Fudzilla: “ATI’s R680 is on track to start shipping in the last week of January and samples should arrive at the hands of happy reviewers even earlier than that. The only thing that ATI is avidly waiting for now is the CrosfireX driver, as this is key to this cards success and ATI’s engineers are working hard to make the software to go along with this rather interesting card. It is a tight schedule, but we hope for ATI’s sake that with the right driver the Radeon HD 3870 X2 can give the GeForce 8800 Ultra a run for its money. But then again, Nvidia also plans to announce the D8E, a dual G92 chip setup in a similar timeframe.

With the 8800GTX’s EOL timeframe being in January, both manufacturers are readying up for double GPU video cards and consumers can only hope that both companies ship with decent drivers, something NVIDIA never did.
