Western Digital, last Tuesday, released news on its re-branding efforts, as well as the launch of a new hard drive line.

The branding system, touted as ‘blue, green, black,’ looks to engage customers in picking products that suit their needs:

WD Caviar Blue will be the standard and regular drives that most consumers have come to know from Western Digital; Green will feature WD’s GreenPower technology. In other words, they’ll be quiet, cool and eco-friendly; WD Caviar Black will be the cream of the crop, claimed at offering “maximum performance for today’s discriminating technology enthusiasts.”

All Caviar Black drives will come with SATA 3 Gb/s interface, as well as 32MB of cache. Also of note, they will utilize a dual processor, and will feature new technologies known as StableTrac™ (the motor shaft is held at both ends) and NoTouch™ ramp load technology (the heads never touch the platter). Whether or not these play a significant role will be subject to review.

Along with the branding system, WD also launched the WD Caviar® Black™ 7200 RPM 3.5-inch SATA hard drive. Coming in denominations of 750GB and 1TB, they are set to be available next week. MSRP puts their prices at $199 for the 750GB model and $249 for the 1TB model.
