We reported way back in November 07 about rumors that Hector Ruiz, the long-standing (over 6 years) and mostly very successful CEO of Advanced Micro Devices was getting ready to step down or be replaced. At the time, AMD’s processor division was quite far behind Intel in terms of performance and market share, and the newly acquired graphics division, ATI, had still not produced anything that could be seen as a competitor to NVIDIA’s monstrous 8800GTX. Since then, we have seen a new processor launch from AMD keep them somewhat in the race at the budget end of the spectrum, and a very recent graphics card launch that quite probably will not only mark the start of the return to graphics dominance, but quite possible a dramatic change in direction for their competitor.

Despite the recent success of their graphics cards, corporate turmoil persists within AMD,  and today the company has announced that Hector Ruiz will be stepping down as the CEO of AMD to be replaced with Dirk Meyer. Ruiz will remain in a prominent position in the company as the Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors.

AMD has a wealth of pretty radical products in the works, and the substantial success of their current GPU lineup would lead us to believe that the worst might just be over. Dirk Meyer’s reign as CEO will definitely be difficult at least at first, since the financial hole AMD seems to be in right now sounds like a formidable problem.

Although the wheels are in motion for success if upcoming products don’t fall flat, new blood at the helm of AMD might be just what the doctor ordered to get things turned around and heading in the right direction. Perhaps Meyer can cause AMD to sneak up in the marketplace while Intel and NVIDIA slug it out for stupid reasons.
