According to Expreview.com Intel’s much-heralded Nehalem will come to market bearing the name “Core i7″. The name “Core i7″ could have something to do with the fact that this is Intel’s 7th generation architecture. Nehalem is set to be announced on August 11th (Monday), so we presume that more details regarding the name choice will be revealed then.
The new name certainly has a lot of people wondering what the hell was wrong with Intel Core 3, but at least the “i7″ will provide a very distinguishable product range.
Intel’s new architecture will be the first in the company’s history to integrate the memory controller onto the processor die. This strategy is very similar to what AMD has been doing since the launch of the Athlon 64. Nehalem one-ups existing technology by incorporating a tri-channel memory controller, which should provide record throughput capabilities from DDR3 modules. Nehalem will also bring back Intel’s old HyperThreading technology - now called simultaneous multithreading - which on a quad-core processor will mean 8 logical processing cores.
Nehalem also does away the the legacy front side bus technology and introduces a new point-to-point interconnect called QPI. This feature again sort of mimics what AMD did with HyperTransport, but improves upon it significantly. QPI should allow very high-throughput, low-latency communication between motherboard components.
We have gone over the details of Nehalem and its first platform, X58, in a previous article. Be sure to check that out for more information.
