The $66 Celeron E1200 looks very attractive at the low-end.
Intel today announced that it would start shipping its first dual-core Celeron processor, the E1200. This opens up a whole lot of opportunities for Intel and people looking for genuine dual-core performance on an extremely tight budget. Whereas consumers previously had to resort to low-cost dual core chips from AMD and inferior dual-core Pentium D technology from Intel, the budget-conscience now has a relatively very solid chip that should off some pretty good performance for the price.
The Celeron E1200 is currently listed for $65.99 at Newegg.com, just $9 less than the simlarly-spec’d Pentium E2140 based on the Allendale core.
The new Celeron is an offspring of the Core micro-architecture which turned the CPU market upside down about a year and a half ago. At the current price, the E1200 looks very attractive as an affordable processor for casual computing and home theater applications. Although not manufactured on Intel’s new 45nm process technology, the 65nm Celeron E1200 probably does not generate too much heat. The Celeron E1200 differs from the Pentium E2140 in L2 Cache amount only, as the new processor has just 512KB available. Both processors operate through an 800MHz front side bus, which means they are compatible with pretty much every motherboard produced after the P965 chipset was released.
While you shouldn’t expect to see benchmarks of the processor at FPSLabs, we have no reservations about giving this processor our recommendation for low-end and home theater PCs. The processor is already widely available from various e-tailers. This is the first time Intel has offered a dual-core processor in the Celeron budget family, and reveals a lot about the current computing trends.
