Intel comes out and explains the reasons behind the 45nm delays. Is there anything more to this than meets the eye?
Via Dailytech: "Intel engineers, speaking on background, detailed the problem. "Intel is very sensitive to mean time to failures. During a simulation, at high clock frequencies, we noticed an increase of potential failures after a designated amount of time."
He continues, "This is not acceptable for our customers that require longterm stability. It’s a showstopper."
While seemingly not as big of an issue as AMD’s TBL bug it is still something that Intel plans on fixing before a full launch. It does seem odd that the EE editions being so expensive are held to lower standards than the cheaper 45nm parts, and the EE parts have been retail for some time. Doesn’t seem that signficant if we haven’t heard of it creeping up in those parts yet.
Sometimes I wonder just how much of a delay is really from hardware issues or Intel worrying about pushing AMD out of the market. Regardless I know a lot of you want these parts in hand a.s.a.p., and many people have held of upgrades in expectation of the mainstream Yorkfield parts. Here is to hoping that it is sooner than later in Q1.
