What if there was a tool you could use to squeeze more performance out of your G80-based graphics card? What if that tool was free?
We have just received news from a former software engineer (from a graphics card manufacturer that is to remain unnamed) has released a BIOS that is compatible with ALL G80 (8800GTX, 8800GTS, 8800GTS 320MB) from ALL manufacturers that is almost guaranteed to increase performance by as much as 20%. According to this engineer, nearly every single G80 that rolls off the table in Taiwan is capable of overclocking. He also states that there are no fundamental differences between normal-priced G80 cards and those that come "factory overclocked" for an extra $50-$100. With this BIOS, the engineer reports that any normal G80 can achieve the performance of the factory overclocked versions with little difficulty.
GotFrag Hardware plans to test this BIOS very soon and report back with some results. However, the very best part about this BIOS is that it is already readily available to the consumer. For free. The included information states that you can increase the performance of your G80-based card by as much as 20% without paying a cent. Whether or not this is too good to be true is not known by us yet, but the engineer has included his own performance benchmarks that seem to back up his claims. The BIOS also touts levels of customization that have never before been seen in the consumer market. The software is installed automatically through a Windows-based flash utility and you can revert to the stock BIOS if you find it does not meet your performance needs.
Another very important aspect to this BIOS is that it can be set to perform as a workstation graphics card. Considering workstation graphics cards sell for quite a lot more than their desktop counterparts, this BIOS will be very attractive to professionals looking for a cheap yet high-performance graphics solution.
