AMD looks to take some ground from Intel’s popular Centrino platform in the mobile market.–

AMD is once again picking a fight with their rivals. With Intel announcing their Atom and revised Centrino platforms, AMD looks to get back into the mix with their mobile “PUMA” platform. This platform takes nearly everything that AMD has been working on so far, and integrates it into a mobile platform. Utilizing the upcoming RS780 chipset allows for the integration of HyperTransport 3.0 technology, ATI HD 3000 series mobile graphic chipsets, and a supposed long battery life. These claims are seemingly worthwhile in almost every aspect.

Alone, the HD 3000 series of graphics is enough to make consumers overwhelmingly joyous, seeing as how it is the newest of chipsets that has been able to regain some ground, single-handedly, for AMD. With the HD 3000 series you get the Avivo video technology, which offloads video processing from the host CPU to the GPU, creating a better experience for the end-user, not to mention it also looks great. Digital inputs for those eager to watch those HD DVD or Blu-ray movies will be included. Gaming on a new HD 3400 or 3600 would be no slouch either, giving you top-notch performance with the use of PCI-Express Gen2.0 support, and the renowned PowerPlay, which helps the notebook save power while not using graphic-intensive applications. The “Griffin” processor will also be a huge factor in features, although the RS780 chipset alone is enough to satisfy the needs of the people.

As someone who watches this AMD camp move forward, I sincerely hope that this small step will get a foot solidly back in the door. A move like this could potentially leave a lasting image of trust and faith for AMD’s favor. Out of current speculation over the past 5 years, I believe AMD is making a better effort to release “quality” products, over “selling” products. I didn’t use “quantity,” because to be honest it really doesn’t fit this scenario. Hopefully we will see some new light shed from this platform.
