It’s that time of year again. The 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show has rolled into Las Vegas, and FPSLabs is here to bring you the goods.

Every year in early January we make the pilgrimage to Las Vegas for the International CES trade show. The largest consumer electronics show in the world takes over sin city on a yearly basis causing massive gridlock and chaos that can only be described as depressing. There are two ways to get to Vegas; flying into McCarran International Airport or driving up Interstate 15. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of attending CES, I can only offer this word of advice: fly. Driving here sucks.

We arrived in the late afternoon, just in time to miss all of the press events that we probably should have attended. Nevertheless we’ve managed to scrape together a list of a couple of things that we will be checking out over the course of the week.

Yoggie Personal Security Server

Tired of those pesky antivirus applications and firewalls taking up valuable resources as they sit idly in your system tray? Yoggie’s Personal Security Server aims to ease your woes by outsourcing all of these pesky applications to a tiny computer the size of a USB thumb drive. The USB 2.0 device will effectively off-load any CPU load normally demanded by such applications. A safer internet experience with no adverse effects on system performance? Sign us up! Yoggie

AMD Radeon HD 3870 X2

R680 is the latest graphics offering from AMD, and it is supposedly going to make its debut at CES. Granted, lots of sites have let loose pictures of the beast well before any NDA said they could, but the official launch is supposed to be one of these next couple of days. Which day you ask? Well, unfortunately we have no idea, but there should be a nice juicy story ready for you on the front page when it the embargo is lifted. Until then, we don’t see any reason to hold back our pictures, enjoy!

Lightglove LtWv Wrist Vmote

We have always had an affinity for new devices that allow us to control computers in ways we never before thought possible. The LtWv Wrist Vmote from Lightglove is one such device. The Vmote is worn on the wrist and senses muscle movements that are then relayed to the host. The Vmote connects wirelessly via Bluetooth 2.0 and doubles as a long distance on/off switch for most electronic devices. Obviously we will need to see this technology up close to see whether or not it or future incarnations of it have potential as gaming controllers, but we don’t see any reason on the surface why this would be a problem. OLEDs!

Last year we were expecting to see all kinds of lovely OLED and SED displays when we ventured into the central hall. Well, we didn’t really get a good look at either technology and it left us pretty disappointed. This year OLED displays are surely to be in high supply from various manufacturers, perhaps most prominent of which is Sony. If all things go according to plan, OLEDs will be one of our first objectives tomorrow morning the show goes live. Sony

Microvision SHOW Pico-projector

[ArticleAdvert]

People always buy cool stuff that is really tiny. Microvision is banking on that statement being fact with its SHOW laser projector. The PDA-sized device connects to digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones, portable media players, and many other host devices and projects high resolution images (848×480) on any surface. The benefits of tiny projectors like this for business professionals that might need to make impromptu presentations speak for themselves. Microvision
